Acne scars classification
Acne scars are caused when there is an inflammatory lesion affecting the dermis of the skin.
They are common in people suffering from acne, especially in cases with moderate to severe acne.
The inflammation in the skin and the irritation in it can lead to an abnormal healing process, which can lead to scars.
These scars can be classified depending on their characteristics.
What normally happens is that the fibroblasts, the cells present in the skin, produce too little or too much of collagen during this abnormal healing process. Collagen is the main protein present in our skin, and has a very important role in the skin structure. That is the reason why the scars can be classified in two main groups whether there is a loss of collagen in the site of the lesion or an excess of it. Acne scars are sometimes mixed in patients and are not easy to classify.
Atrophic scars
Atrophic scars have lost collagen during the healing process, and are the most common type of scars.
They can even be further classified depending on their shape
Rolling (M-Shaped)
Icepick (V-Shaped)
Boxcar (U-Shaped)
Hypertrophic scars
Less common, characterised by an excess of collagen deposition during the healing phase
Hypertrophic scarring
Keloids
A special type of hypertrophic scars, when the collagen deposition grows outside the borders of the original lesion
Keloid scarring
